The coast north of Toliara holds the most visited patches of Madagascar's spiny forest, including the Reniala private reserve with its baobabs and the wider Mikea forest. Early morning visits can find the long-tailed ground-roller and the sub-desert mesite, two of the island's most sought-after birds, along with spiny-forest lizards and tortoises.
