Size

Up to 30.5cm in total length

Phelsuma madagascariensis is a day gecko of up to 30.5cm in total length, the largest in Madagascar, matched among living day geckos only by the Round Island day gecko. It is one of the most widespread day geckos on the island and occurs in a wide range of habitats (Wikipedia, general species account).

The northern form once treated as a subspecies, the giant day gecko (Phelsuma grandis), has since been raised to a full species, so older sources may describe a wider species. Records on Catalogue of Life place the species from the north to the east coast and on several offshore islands, including Nosy Be, Nosy Komba and Nosy Sakatia. AnAge lists a maximum longevity of 13.6 years and an adult weight of about 21g.
